Welcome to the Institute of English and American Studies
Introducing the University of Rostock's Institute for English and American Studies, the Institut für Anglistik/Amerikanistik (IAA):
English and American Studies combines British and American literary, cultural and linguistic studies as well as Applied Language Practice and - for the teaching profession - subject didactics. In fact, these subject areas encompass the entire diversity of the English-speaking world, which you can discover during your studies.

Studium
The diverse research interests of the teaching staff relate to both historical and current linguistic, literary and cultural phenomena in the English-speaking world. This research is reflected in the broad thematic spectrum of teaching.
You can set individual priorities in your studies and give free rein to your curiosity in your choice of seminars. The institute is characterized by small seminar groups, personal support and direct contact between lecturers and students. The FANAM (Fachschaft Anglistik/Amerikanistik) student representative body, which has been active and competent for many years, is regularly involved in the planning of the course and also contributes significantly to the positive atmosphere at the institute.

The City of Rostock
As a city by the sea, Rostock has a lot to offer its students. The University of Rostock is located at several sites, making it a particularly important and integral part of the city's culture: a wide range of cultural activities are on offer for students to enjoy and to get involved with, such as events organized by the Hochschule für Musik und Theater ('University of Music and Theatre'), the Rostocker Kulturwoche ('Rostock Culture Week'). There is an active pub and club scene and a wide range of sporting activities that enrich everyday student life.
Mobility Programs
Everyone can and should benefit from mobility and experience life abroad. Our institute and the International House offer a range of opportunities and support for studying, working or traveling.
